Review

Taking a punt on a Free Fringe show is both exciting and terrifying in equal measure when your time here is precious: what if the hour’s squandered on dross? Does the fact that it’s free mean it’s going to be awful? Or might I unearth the most wonderful gem I’d never have found were I not to have take a leap of faith? Happily, the latter is exactly the case with Miranda Kane’s numerically titled hour at Sneaky Pete’s on Cowgate.

This show is different every time – members of the public are simply invited to call the number and leave a message. Daily, Kane has sifted through the mailbox and comes armed with a collection of the best/worst/most intriguing for her audience. And before we judge others, she reassures us that we each carry around a socially awkward quirk or two and issues stickers to help us out: “I smiled and laughed because I can’t hear you”, “handshakes not hugs”, “I don’t know your name and I can’t ask again because it’s been 3 weeks so now it’s weird”.

Miranda cleverly posits choices to her audiences, entrusting them with the direction of each show and of the decision-making power. Instinctively, and thanks to her ability to walk the fine line between mocking and nurturing with delicious mischief in her eyes, Kane’s audiences seem to always choose the positive options. Thus far, the show has created a rock star, dealt with some complicated sexting issues, given a Fringe-goer his first 5 minutes on stage, found a date for a friend…and all the while, the audience howls and thrills at the pure, live experience of it all.

Miranda Kane is a magnificent bundle of the best things on the Fringe; fun, welcoming and joyous. In 07800 834 030, all human life is here. Fundamentally, she proves that, underneath it all, we’re none of us too different from our neighbours. A show that embodies the true spirit of the Fringe and of humanity to boot!
