Review

Guests of the one-act, one-woman show of “Phone Whore” were led upstairs in the very poplar Balham venue, The Bedford, last night. Unfortunately, that was the last show in London for Moore. The scene was set with the bare essentials for an all-nighter of a PSO (phone sex operator): a comfy sofa, phone, coffee maker; microwave and a box of index cards with over 900 names of clients. The intimate setting made the audience feel as if we were right there in Larissa’s (Moore’s PSO alias) living room with her. The phone rings, and Larissa walks her audience through the first of four phone calls. It’s impressive to see how quickly she snaps right into character and fulfils ‘Steven’s’ sexual fantasy for all of seven minutes. A hush covered the room as Larissa’s brash sexual conversation brought Steven to a climax.

After the call, Larissa educates her audience of the day-in-the-life of a PSO and the extreme range of sexual fantasy requests made from men from all walks of life. Each call gets darker and you can see the strain on Larissa’s face as she maintains her decorum to perform what the caller has asked of her. Depending on what you as an individual deem, inappropriate and your comfortability level with sex, you may find some of her calls quite uncomfortable, but don’t let that deter you from seeing this fantastically raw and edgy show. By the end of the show you can tell it’s more than just a job to Moore. She emotionally connects with some of the callers and speaks fondly of them.

By her own admission, when she first started as a PSO six-years ago she had a rough 3 months, because of some of the disturbing calls. But six years later, Moore proudly boasts of the added creative skills she’s learned since becoming a PSO and credits her imagination and craftiness, which aids in her writing as a bonus. Overall, Phone Whore is a magnificent show and you will leave with a sense of new self awareness. I won’t say the show is easy to watch, but it is most certainly thought provoking, and Moore does a superb job of inviting you to her world of sexual fantasy scenarios. Please be aware that this show is for an adult audience ONLY, but if you’ve ever been curious about the phone sex industry, Phone Whore is definitely the show for you.
