If you enjoy pirates, silliness, and musical theatre, then head on down to C for a show that will have you laughing from the start. Not for those of somber sensibilities, this new musical is utterly ridiculous in the best possible way.
Review
Piramania tells the tale of young John Silverman who longs for more than his uneventful life in quiet Penzance. Seeking adventure, he leaves his family and joins the crew of Captain Blue-black Beard’s pirate ship. However, all is far from simple along this adventure, and John is soon caught up in a dramatic tale of ‘death, despair, deception; murder, betrayal and incestuous conception’.
If the above description brings a smile to your face, then this show will have you rolling in the aisles. It really is brilliantly silly – and full to overflowing with surprises. The gags come thick and fast, and there were boos, hisses, and laughs-a-plenty, as this professional cast unraveled the plot which somehow swings from incest to murder and back again in one great wave of a pirate flag.
Personally, I found some of the comedy accents a little wearing, but the upbeat score and jovial direction held my interest effortlessly, and maximized the laughs. Pirmania is utterly ridiculous in the best possible way. A wonderfully swashbuckling pirate romp – catch it while you can.
