Brighton Fringe 2008

Tim Minchin

Tim Minchin

Venue: The Udderbelly

Festival:

Low Down

An Australian comic with a difference; a bloody big grand piano. A delightful mixture of stand up and comedy songs.

Review

Okay, so hands up, I thought that Tim Minchin was going to have more of a character comedy element thus pushing it into the theatre remit of FringeReview. In some regards it was quite a traditional standup routine. What differentiated was the virtuoso musicianship of Tim Minchin who is seemingly a daffy comic by day and concert pianist by night. His fingers were a blur as he sang about such varied and random topics as his inescapable musical geekiness, evolutionary science and the plight of dancing bears.

Particularly charming, and thankfully funny, were the sections where he spoke about his wife and child in a hugely inappropriate way. This was a hugely likable comedian who has found a perfect way to combine his talents. Just a shame  that Minchin only performed for one night as the Udderbelly was packed and the crowd just couldn’t get enough.
