Kate Saffin talks to Dr Phil Hammond and Dame Clare Gerada about saving the NHS with evidence based comedy

As someone who had a career spanning 43 years in the NHS, the opportunity to explore Fifty Minutes to Save the NHS with Drs Phil Hammond and Clare Gerada (also Dame Clare) was a real treat.

Phil has been a doctor in the public eye for many years with a long career spanning not just medicine but comedy at the Fringe, on Radio 4 and television. This foray into Fringeworld is a first for Clare. She’s still not quite sure why she agreed but having started is thorougly enjoying herself.

In a nutshell they describe the show, and more broadly their work, as ‘Evidence based comedy’, using comedy to share some of the key facts about the NHS, about public health, about the lifestyle risks and why shifting the focus to prevention and supporting health in the community is the way to save the NHS.

Along the way there are some good hints about performing comedy and responding to your audience.
