Brighton Fringe Theatre Focus: A immigrant’s journey through solo theatre

“In recent years, the fame of Brighton as the city of sanctuary for migrants has been compromised by the constant pressures on housing and hotel accommodation and, last week, by the negative publicity of the shocking court case involving three asylum seekers.”

FLIGHT: One Man’s Journey, is a new theatre production set to be staged at 5 p.m. on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 May at the Grania Dean Studio, Lantern Theatre. This piece “will show the world from the perspective of an immigrant, giving the audience insight into how it actually feels to cross oceans and journey to unfamiliar and often unwelcoming cultures.”

Billed as a powerful one man play, it is told through narrative storytelling and is sometimes comic and also poignant and deeply moving. It focuses on Maneek, a boy raised in a remote village in Bangladesh, who is moved to a city slum and eventually is forced to undertake his long journey from home, geographically and emotionally. His intimate tale is both personal and universal as he battles with fear, grapples with love and pursues, above all, a sense of belonging.

Naz Sheikh, who is actor in residence with Pricking Thumbs Theatre Company who are bringing the play to the Fringe Festival, will be playing the role of Maneek. Naz moved from Bangladesh to the UK in 2002. The play is written by Martin Lytton and directed by Jacquie Crago, actress and voice coach, who has worked for years with the RSC and the National Theatre (War Horse).
