Review

Sam Hickman commands the stage in Sexy Rude Harp Concert. In part, due to her “I don’t give a f*ck what you think” attitude. She’s sassy, sexy, and confident in herself. Hickman is the Tom Lehrer of the comedy harp. Moving between anecdotes about getting laid while managing to strip tease, play a harp, and tell jokes is no small feat. Yet, Hickman doesn’t need your or anyone else’s permission to excel at what she does.

Simply put, artistry is what is on display. Her harp skills are immaculate. For me, it was fascinating to watch her play learning new aspects of the instrument and her total control of it. I want to know how Hickman formed such a perfect combination of music, comedy, and strip teasing. She was a modern Gypsy Rose Lee complete with sassy comebacks and beautiful outfits.

You leave the theatre feeling there is still more Hickman has to offer. We have seen only a glimpse in this hour of her immense talent. Her performance is unstoppable and I’m excited to see how her work develops. Perhaps Hickman needs to look into making a proper plotted musical, after all, she has already perfected the act of cabaret.
