A shortened adaptation of the hit Green Day musical that embodies the early 2000s punk era and wears it proudly for the whole Fringe to see.
Review
Performed by Sound Events Scotland, this production of American Idiot is a shortened adaptation of the original musical, following a trio of friends as they face their ambitions and dreams, causing separation, love and drama along the way. Some scenes have been cut or shortened for this version of the show but this has clearly been carefully considered by its directors, not missing any of the important and impactful story beats.
There is an aggression and angst associated with Green Day’s music which this cast and company have managed to capture almost perfectly in performance, costume and choreography.
The dances and movement hit hard on the beats that it needs to, emphasising the tone of the songs. The cast fill the stage and keep it alive with character during the large numbers and manage to maintain that high energy throughout the longer songs. However, this does not mean that the cast are not allowed to slow down and embrace the more somber moments and songs, and giving the audience a much needed change of pace.
The cast have been dressed in attire that sends you back to early 2000s, embracing its American punk ascetic, pushed even further by the vocals of the cast that sound just like their voices were designed for this style of music. The performances of the ensemble cast members were just as electric as the principals, and I found myself following some of the different characters to see their journeys through the songs and scenes. Each character stood out on their own and it was clear the actors had taken the time to develop their narratives and relationships with their fellow characters, which were a joy to follow through the story.
This is an incredibly strong show amplified by a strong cast that nailed every part of what makes Green Day fantastic musicians and storytellers. To be able to keep the show feeling well paced and impactful even after cutting it down is an impressive feat all on its own. A must see for Musical Theatre fans attending the fringe.
