Review
Political comedy can be incredibly divisive. There is a moment when this middle aged, cis, white man walks on to the stage that we think he is about to start a politically swayed conversation that could be very uncomfortable. Actually what unfolds is an insight into the changes we witness around us, as times and technology moves on: bodies slow down and family begin to make decisions and have discussions about you in WhatsApp groups we are not a part of.
G Watson oozes a relaxed confidence and is clearly comfortable in this format, stood unravelling accounts of changing lightbulbs, navigating social media and developments in health that come with getting older. We are quickly lulled by Watsons charm and endearing accounts of the challenges he faces.
It is refreshing to see comedy where no one in the audience feels picked on, it makes us feel safe to laugh hard and get cosy. Watson handles his audience well and uses the feedback of laughter or at times silence with skill and deliberately manipulates moments that lead us into the trap of some great punchlines.
After a short comfort break, Watson boasts that his show is the only one performing at the inaugural MedFringe that has been redacted by a legal team. We find ourselves hoping Tracy (the apparent legal advisor) isn’t listening so he can spill the beans on … we are not sure what.
Without wanting to drop any spoilers: the redacted part of the show is told with skill and joy. We loved it. This section could benefit from a few extra beats and a defined finish that would have left us roaring with applause.
The second half of the show is heavier than the first but the set up takes us there perfectly and we are hooked for what unfolds. We are left curious, wanting more.
This comic is bringing fresh material in a way that connects with people. Even though I am not Gen X, this is still highly relatable comedy. I look forward to seeing what else he has to offer.
