Groundbreaking trans Japanese-American acrobatics
Review
Name me another show that explores the intersection of trans-masc identity and Japanese-American culture through acrobatics. I sincerely doubt there is any show that does, nor as beautiful and impactful as Box [M] was tonight. The title refers to the empty box next to gender one must mark. Do you choose the M or F box? And yet, the box is simultaneously the confines of gender identity. It is a familiar metaphor explored to the fullest through incredible acrobatics. Delicate lighting choices and projection only supplement the material further. It is a shame that Endo and Roxas were in the smaller, less technically fit venue. They deserve the largest stage and the love of the masses. In but a few years time, every fringe around the world will be begging them to perform and handing them award after award.
Landyn Endo and Os Roxas are gifted acrobatic performers. And yet, as I found out, this is their first fringe show. This work is of such high quality, profoundness, and craft, it stands alongside the established fringe acrobatics with ease. Endo and Roxas have their own unique voice to share and are a fresh addition to the movement theatre world. This is unbridled queer joy explored with heart and humor. And my goodness, the acrobatics is jaw-dropping. Roxas, in particular, shows off unparalleled upper-body strength and control. I exclaimed multiple times: “He’s not about to do that,” and he did, in fact, proceed to do said crazy stuff. Endo, of course, stands tall next to Roxas serving as the show’s heart. They too showcase a delicate grace and fluidity that is beautiful to behold.
These are artists who must be watched. This is theatre pushing forward for trans representation on stage. Incredible.
