TAMPA FRINGE: An Interview with Deception Theater

As we approach Tampa Fringe, our review critic Noah Alfred Pantano spoke with Steve Decraemer from DeCeption Theater about his upcoming magic show (of sorts). We discussed his work, techniques, and hopes for the festival.

NP: Hey Steve! So right away, as someone who also is producing a play (of sorts) myself, I’m curious what you mean by your show DeCeption Theatre being a magic show (of sorts)

SD: So I wouldn’t say it’s a traditional magic show. Yes, it has certain elements of a traditional show but it’s also heavily influenced by circus sideshows, and creepier things. We even toss in a brief seance parlor bit.  MAGIC SHOW sounds really bright and cheerful. It isn’t that.

NP: How long have you been doing magic?

SD: I’ve been doing magic on and off (mostly off) for about forty years now and the last few decades I do shows few and far between.

NP: Where are you from?

SD: I’m originally from the Detroit area and now reside in Savannah GA….live it.

NP: Why do you like performing at fringes like Tampa?

SD: I choose my locations carefully.  I put a ton of thought and time into the visual imagery of the show.  From selection of everyday props to extreme overkill on mod-podging. Lighting and sound are huge to me as well and I’d rather play an old small theater that fits the vibe than a huge modern theater that doesn’t feel right. I think Fringe is a perfect fit for me since my show is so quirky.  I think the Fringe audience typically thinks outside the box and I love that.

NP: What do you hope audiences take away from this unique magic show?

SD: I don’t think there is a right answer for the impression people should have when leaving.  Some will be amazed, some grossed out, and others may find it humorous, but I don’t think it leaves anyone indifferent. That’s important to me. Even if someone hates it I’d rather have that than indifferent.

During the last show I did I told the audience that I was going to do a reenactment of an old time seance.  In other words, I was just mimicking what they did back then.  Even so, I still ended up with people walking out because they were uncomfortable.  I took it as a compliment.
Oh, and if you haven’t figured it out yet.  This isn’t for the kiddies.  Fourteen and older only please.

DeCeption Theater is playing June 18-21 at the Tampa Rep Space at Tampa Fringe. Tickets are on sale now. https://festival.tampafringe.org/events/deception-theater/
