Listening to Jess Fuchs tell you a story is like going for a great catch-up date with your friend who you haven’t seen in far too long. The kind of catch-up where the baristas are sweeping underneath your feet, but you still can’t get the hint because you’re too busy cackling together, completely engrossed in the conversation.
Sure, some of us go through a break-up or a health wobble or any sort of crisis really and decide leaving the country is the answer. Not all of us manage to make it worse for ourselves.
In Feral, her fringe stand-up debut, we are taken on a hilarious and wonderfully chaotic journey from Australia to Ireland, as well as for a sail aboard the Titanic. We are reminded of the ridiculous adventures we have been on with our friends (although maybe ours had a slightly less painful ending than hers!) as we join her for the hilarious ride.
Fuchs is a fantastic storyteller, bringing multiple strands together and calling back to them throughout the set. She has a knack for taking seemingly ordinary experiences and finding the absurdity and hilarity in them, building stories from her observations that feel both unique to her but still relatable to us.
Quick-witted and effortless, Fuchs gets the audience on side through her crowdwork so quickly. When she is telling you a side-story and building the punchline to save for later, her delivery is energetic and engaging, with a conversational quality that makes the full house of her sold-out show feel intimate.
Dressed in a fabulous black ruffle dress, Fuchs commands the stage with confidence. Her stage persona is electric and you can see why she is so popular in-person as well as online. She immediately brings an infectious energy to the room that makes you want to lean in and hear what’s going to happen next at the Titanic museum.
Most importantly, Feral is an extremely funny show. There are plenty of big laughs in this show. Fuchs reminds us that friends are there to remind you how special and loved you are, and also to make fun of you and take a picture of you in your low, embarrassing moment just to keep you humble.
