How do you put important History into a Modern Context Using Theatre: Paul Levy talks to Tim Marriott from Smokescreen Productions about Mengele and Judas, two theatre pieces that explore issues of important relevance today.

Judas is “a political thriller with biblical bite. In a contemporary single-faith Middle Eastern state, a charismatic preacher with a radical message of peace emerges from the desert. As violence continues to tear the region apart, his followers are persecuted and imprisoned. A 21st-century Judas is interrogated but is this zealot really the betrayer or betrayed, and who is ultimately pulling the strings?

Mengele is set in “1979, a beach in Brazil, a drowning man meets a mysterious woman who cajoles, questions and flatters him into defending the indefensible. Created in support of the Holocaust Educational Trust, Mengele offers a contemporary warning from the past of what happens when the world buys into hatred and bigotry. Returning to Edinburgh after last year’s sell-out season, revised and refreshed for 2019.”
