ARTIST Workshop – Supporting Fringe Performers is a 45-minute support workshop running daily at 3:15 PM from August 11-17 at C Alto venue, conveniently located just off the Royal Mile. Created by Kim, an American entertainment industry professional with experience at major Hollywood studios including BBC Studios, Paramount, and Warner Brothers. This workshop addresses the unique challenges artists face during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Using specially designed cards to facilitate discussion, the session covers essential themes of community, expectations, and strategy for navigating the Fringe experience.
Kim, who is attending her third Fringe, created this space through her production company TBD, which bridges the gap between industry and artistry. The workshop recognizes that Fringe artists must juggle multiple roles as performer, marketer, producer, and administrator, often leading to feelings of isolation. Beyond the group sessions, Kim offers one-on-one consultations, drawing from her professional background to provide genuine industry insight and support to emerging artists navigating what she calls “an odyssey out in these streets.”

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT
Interview conducted at the C Alto venue during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on 13th August 2025
Tom: Hello, we are here at the C-Alto venue, part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and I’m here with Kim, who is American and holds a fantastic workshop for actors. I would call it an emotional sort of support group, but she’s going to explain about that. So Kim, tell us what you’re doing here.
Kim: Hi there. Thank you so much for having me today and for having a spotlight on our artist workshop. Our artist workshop is actually a 45-minute workshop that we’re holding from August 11th to August 17th. It’s at 3:15 p.m. at C-Alto, which is actually conveniently right off of the Royal Mile for any artists that want to come in and then very quickly after go out and flyer, because I know that that is very much the ecosystem here.
So yeah, ARTIST is a 45-minute workshop where we have cards that help to create dialogue around the experience at the Fringe. We cover themes such as community, expectations, and strategy of being an artist here at the Fringe. It’s also a great space to be able to talk to peers and get to know other folks and kind of hopefully feel like you’re not alone in this entire process, because it is an odyssey out in these streets; being able to not only be an artist but also to market and also be a producer and an admin for your vision here at the Fringe.
Tom: It is definitely an emotional roller coaster being here at the Fringe, especially if you’re here the first time. Let me ask you a couple of questions. Number one, is this open to anyone or just the artists of the venue here at C-venue, or how does it work?
Kim: Yeah, so this workshop is open to anybody here at the Fringe, whether you’re a traditional artist and you’re on the stage, or a producer, a director, a writer. If you have an artistic bone in your body, come through and we can actually chat about what that experience looks like.
Tom: Okay. And it’s absolutely free, am I correct?
Kim: So the workshop is pay what you can. It starts at £4. We did that in order to make sure that anybody can come, despite any type of financial background. But feel free to reach out if that is outside of your cost.
Tom: Okay. Let’s speak just literally for a second about you. I mean, you are American and this is not the first year you’re doing this, so why are you here and just a little bit about your background?
Kim: Yeah, so this is my third Fringe now. I absolutely love the Fringe because it’s an incredible grassroots space to connect with artists and see work in progress productions. Initially I came out as an audience member, but through that process I actually set up a production company called TBD, which helps to bridge the gap between the industry and artistry. I come out to Edinburgh every year to be able to speak to artists who would find the most value in that type of program.
This year we have this workshop that is called ARTIST. However, I also bring a background from Hollywood. I work in Hollywood business. I’ve been at places like BBC Studios, Paramount, currently Warner Brothers, and before that I was at a talent agency called Creative Artist Agency, which is the number one talent agency in the world. So I really like to tell artists, come chat about your experience, but also, I’m here to chat with people one-on-one after the workshops. I do this because I love it. I’m not here to make money, and please use me as a resource.
Tom: Okay. On a side note, I did attend one of your workshops. I find it very useful and also very much an opportunity not to be alone because the Fringe can be a lonely experience. So I really admire what you do. If somebody wants to get in touch just to know the times when to come, what do they have to do?
Kim: Yeah, thank you so much. So you can actually find all of our information at hello-tbd.com or you can look us up on Instagram at hello.tbd. All of our information is there and you can take a little bit of a look at TBD, which is the producing arm of the workshop that we have this time, and you can see how we create opportunities for artists to find resources and find that business mindset through their work.
Tom: Well, thank you very much, Kim. And to all the artists out there, you’re not alone. And if you do feel alone, get in touch with Kim. Thank you very much, Kim.
Kim: Thank you so much.
