Steve Goodie is a musician and comedian from Nashville, Tennessee. He has been the host of the internationally renowned music venue The Bluebird Café in Nashville for 17 years. Steve’s album of Harry Potter parody songs was a hit on audio entertainment platform SiriusXM, and legendary broadcaster Dr Demento describes him as “one of our most talented 21st century parodists.” Steve has been seen on Showtime, Comedy Central, and the long running Grand Ole Opry.
Steve Goodie has been a fan of “Weird Al” Yankovic and his quirky, witty song parodies since childhood. His hero worship of Daniel Radcliffe came later when, as a grown-up fan of the Harry Potter books, Steve (and the world) was introduced to the boy who would play Harry.
So it was serendipitous that in 2022 Radcliffe was cast to play “Weird Al” in a biopic of Al’s life – a film that came out on Steve’s birthday, no less. And thus it was clearly fated that Steve had to pay his own homage to both his heroes in this fun musical story.
With the help of PowerPoint, a small yellow friend called Bob, and two big stars (kinda), Steve brings it all together with jokes, songs, accordions, and guitars. What’s more, he’s even learnt the accordion just for the show! And there are some dazzling visual effects! He’s truly broken into the piggy bank and spent dozens of dollars!
Steve says of his show’s inspirations: “Al and Dan are both self-described word nerds (as am I), they both idolise the cleverness of musician Tom Lehrer (as do I), and I had already parodied one of Al’s original songs, ‘Hardware Store,’ to create ‘Dumbledore’- a synopsis of the Harry Potter universe. It’s just kismet that I should bring this exciting, preposterous, and inconsequential tribute onstage at the 2024 Fringe.”
Paul Levy caught up with Steve in theSpaceUK press office at Surgeon’s Hall…
