Review

Phone Whore is an exuberant and slightly loud one woman guide to men’s sexuality as evinced by those that go in for phone sex, phoning up a premium rate number to have a sexual conversation ( or indeed just an ordinary conversation at times), with the often inventive, mostly obscene, often inventive and obscene, Cameryn Moore.  Cameryn is accepting, resigned, often tired (this line of work tends to involve a lot of waiting for the phone to ring in the early hours of the morning), but never lost for words. It’s a lively guide from the vanilla fantasies to darker and sometimes more violent ones with racial and under-age elements. Whoa! I can hear you thinking, but Cameryn has us on a journey and these are phone fantasies – and she is clear that they aren’t real, they aren’t enacted.

When Cameryn accepts a call (the phone rings regularly throughout the production), she sits in her armchair with a battered teddy bear and talks pornography down the phone to some guy with his dick in his hand who generally just listens to her, or asks for something  related to the desires that have got them to phone up and pay up.  It’s business , she can make a reasonable living from it, it seems, despite the huge number of webcams around.  Her performance itself is energetic and breathless, it’s clear that she does most of the talking and has to put all the creative energy into fleshing out the scenarios they want to wank to, just as she is performing for us.  So yet another aspect of male laziness is brought to the fore!

There’s more here than you want to know in some ways, but it’s riveting just the same. The point is that as a phone chat operator(PCO) Cameryn has to listen to them all and to make some connection. Sometimes it’s good – they may be out there wanting to know about her panties and her breasts, but there is a sense of just wanting to be accepted for desires that are running powerfully though their psyche.  I think Cameryn successfully gets across the fact that these are just people (if almost exclusively male people), with stuff in their heads – we’re not responsible for what we desire, we are responsible for our actions.

As the show progresses she lets us down slowly, the vanilla calls first and then the ones that even she finds difficult – but still she does them. She speaks her part of the calls out in front of us and we hold our breaths.  She keeps up a constant flow – and we’re still with her when she breaks out and talks about the calls, directly and honestly. Then it’s done, it’s over and no one was harmed in this fantasy even if it didn’t rock your boat.  I don’t judge, she says, after a powerful evening of lots of phone talk sex, I don’t judge because I’ve got all sorts of stuff in my head, so why should I judge them?  What also came across was her compassion for these misfit perversions. You can’t judge someone for their thoughts is the message.  If you want to hear what this huge market for sex chat is all about, then see this show. I think if you’re male you’ll accept that that is pretty much what the world of male desire can be– if you’re female it will either confirm your worst suspicions, or open up a whole new perspective – or perhaps, whether you are male or female, it will just make you just wonder, in a gentle accepting kind of way, at the range of human sexuality.
