Review
This is my second time seeing ‘Stamptown.’ After last year’s flirting rampage from Jack Tucker, I was curious to see how he would interact with a new entourage and audience. Stamptown is the ultimate cool peoples party. You walk into the Spiegeltent to find 2 dancers and a roller skater strutting moves, up and down the catwalk, to bouncing music with strong bass.
Jack Tucker, played by Zack Zucker, is the host of Stamptown. This is his circus. It almost feels like he’s throwing his own ultimate ‘cool’ party, because he wasn’t never invited to any of them. The polarising image of him and the environment already sets us up for something humorous and cringe. After doing his own set, in which he tends to get stressed out about trying to make the audience laugh, he introduces the next acts. His humour is supported by silly sound effects played consistently throughout the show, by director Jonny Wooley, giving the full illusion of immature frat bro.
This year Jack seemed to be more ‘professional’ than previous years. Maybe it was due to the acts he had, but Jack used to do the most outrageous things, including eating food off of naked performers. This however was a milder show starring Mr Cardboard, a clown who is a big name this fringe and for good reason. Britains got Talent’s, Viggo Venn and America & France’s Got Talent’s David Pereira, providing silly behaviour. Cory Peter Lane, who is part of team Stamptown, providing a more gentler side to him than usual. And Donna Carnow and Jazida who both performed outstanding circus aerial and fire work. Tucker even introduced a young indian comedian for his debut.
The show does rely somewhat on Tuckers chemistry with his guests, it was there especially with Venn and Mr Cardboard, but the show noticeably dragged when he was interacting with some other guests.
If you’re looking for a fun time with your friends, Stamptown is usually a safe bet. They at least have a couple of solid acts that will get you and your friends laughing. They seem to be quite on it, with who is popular in the comedy and clown scenes and are quick to snatch up these growing big names. It’s also a rotational show when it comes to guests, so you never know who Jack Tucker will be introducing you to. The best bonus for me is the Shazam opportunity for my playlist.
