Back for another stellar Fringe run, Grace Campbell, critically described “nepo-nympho-Queen,” is once again in Edinburgh for her new show, The Lady is a Tramp. Combining her signature self-satirisation and her 365 party-girl persona, she navigates an hour railing against the clutches of mundanity – the rather unhelpful and unsolicited advice given to her by a male comedian on tour – and regales us with a wealth of hilarious stories centred around femininity, sex-positivity, and a particularly raucous night out in Soho.
Recounting a “mundane” day in her life down in London, it’s a strong conceit for an array of stories that have to be heard to be believed. From misogynistic men in lido saunas who complain that she’s talking too loud to a particularly vicious attack by an ageist and sexist crow, she tackles the highs and lows of a random day in your early thirties to the extreme enjoyment of the entire room. Her Soho story involving free drinks and a toilet cubicle was the absolute cherry on the top of an already staggering amount of chaos, and had a beautiful final flourish that ended the set with a bang.
Campbell is gleefully self-aware, and has a playful energy throughout – both egging on assumptions of how people perceive her, even down to acknowledging her vocal fry, to touching on some of the more personal topics and some darker moments in her life. Despite repeated attempts from her parents to implore her to grow up, she adamantly refuses to stop enjoying herself – and is all the better for it, especially if The Lady is a Tramp is anything to go by.
