Fatiha El-Ghorri seems to be everywhere of late, and it’s an incredibly welcome sight. It’s hard to believe, then, that this is actually her Fringe debut, bringing her sell-out show, Cockney Stacking Doll, to the Monkey Barrel stage this August. It’s a massive hit – if the Fringe website is to be believed, it’s sold out for the entire run, but as with all Monkey Barrel shows, there’s still a high chance of snagging one of the hottest tickets in town.
El-Ghorri delivers a strong power-hour of comedy that covers everything from modern dating and family dinners to Hackney superiority and fart jokes galore. Her jokes come thick and fast, summoning a flurry of laughs that’s a near constant throughout. If you’ve seen any of her stand-up before, you’ll have an idea of what to expect, with outlandish stories surrounding her Hackney pride (not to be confused with Brummie – a mistake you’ll make at your peril) alongside her Moroccan heritage, but even if not, she’s certainly well worth a watch.
Her topics range from hilarious to heart wrenching, as she likewise touches on health scares, divorce, and Islamophobia in an honest account of her experiences as a visibly Muslim woman in Britain today. Never one to dwell, though, she carries the pacing consistently throughout, and segues neatly back to more terrible tales of messing with her nieces and nephews alongside other catty one liners. El-Ghorri’s bluntness is her gift, as she has an innate talent of making any story funny by just telling it.
A rollercoaster hour of ecstatic laughs mixed with a darker retrospective, Fatiha El-Ghorri is a welcome addition to the Fringe Festival line-up. Her first show in Edinburgh’s August season, but hopefully by no means her last, Cockney Stacking Doll is a refreshing look at El-Ghorri’s thoughts on the world today – along with some fantastic fart stories to match. An hour of frank comedy with plenty of throwaway jokes for good measure, her Fringe debut is certainly a guaranteed laugh.
