There’s two things to know about Mario Adrion. He’s German, and he’s hot. Well, at least a subsection of gay men on the Internet think so, and it’s certainly a common view, given how one viral photo led to an extensively varied career as a male model in America. His first Fringe show, Live a Little charts the rise and fall of his quest to appear on billboards in the Big Apple, and explores the fallout that comes with emigrating halfway across the world on a ‘talent’ visa.
If you’re already familiar with Adrion’s YouTube antics, you might think you know what you’re in for. He’s German, so there’s a lot of history jokes ripe for the picking, and by his own admission, the Nazi jokes are going to come out whenever we get a little too vulnerable, okay? Adrion’s humour might not be to everyone’s taste, but he has an enthusiastic following for a reason – they’ve even had to add a series of extra shows at the Pleasance due to high demand. But even if you’ve already seen Adrion’s comedy before, his show presents a much more emotional arc sheltered under the barrage of jokes bombarding the audience non-stop.
Male modelling isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, it seems, and Adrion discusses a few of the darker moments in his life, including some longstanding issues with appearance and food, as well as a few harrowing moments talking about his experiences with sexual assault. Loath as I am to use the B-word, it certainly is that – brave. Watching him talk about probably the lowest moments in his life in front of a crowd of several hundred strangers is an incredibly brave thing to do, something that, as he says so himself, will hopefully help break down the stigma around sexual assault, particularly for men.

If you’re already a fan of Adrion’s work, then you’ll have a great time, and if you’re already haven’t heard of him before, then welcome. His first Fringe, but hopefully not his last – and with the parting news that a baby is on the way, I imagine the next one will be full of dad jokes galore.
